Bernice chooses subjects that have a personal connection. Many of her paintings feature the play of light on landscapes, portraits/figures and still life. Paula explores a wide range of subjects and aims to capture a moment in time. Her painting “Burst of Flowers” was featured on the cover of the On the Go section of the Home News Tribune.

 

Paula and Bernice enjoy working in various mediums, especially watercolor. They both are members in the prestigious Garden State Water Color Society and New Jersey Water Color Association. Their work has been selected into various juried exhibitions and have won awards. Both artists artwork is also in private collections.

Biography

 

          In my art I choose subjects that have a personal connection. Many of my paintings feature the play of light on landscapes, portraits/figures and still life.

 

I started painting at the age of 12 and throughout the years, studied at the Art Students League in New York and also with many notable artists. Working in oil, pastel, acrylics, charcoal or watercolor, the challenge was always there. Today I work primarily in watercolor.

 

          My paintings have been selected into juried shows throughout New Jersey including the Ocean City Cultural Center juried exhibit in 2012, and I won first place watercolor in the 2013 Senior Show and Judges Choice at Pine Shores Art Association.  I was elected to full membership in the prestigious Garden State Watercolor Society and to the New Jersey Watercolor Society.  My painting was selected by the GSWCS for the Ken McCann award for a scene in the natural environment. My paintings are also in private collections.

 

Currently I am program director for the Suburban Artist Guild in East Brunswick.  I have also taught classes in drawing and watercolor for adults

 

          I continue in my pursuit of excellence. “I enjoy painting and hope to bring some of that joy to the viewer’s life.”

My primary medium is watercolor, though I enjoy working in collage, pastels, colored pencil as well as pen and ink. Using varying techniques and media, I explore a wide range of subjects and aim to capture a moment in time.

          I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from Brooklyn College. I am on the Board of the Garden State Watercolor Society (GSWS), an Associate Member of the New Jersey Watercolor Society, Past Co-President of the Suburban Artist Guild, Member of the Pine Shores Art Association, Exhibit Planner of the Suburban Artist Guild, and, Co-Curator at Fiddleheads Restaurant in Jamesburg.

          I have exhibited in art shows throughout New Jersey and received awards including the “Gardens of the Garden State” Poster Image Award, and, Honorable Mention in the GSWS Associate Member Juried Exhibit.

My painting “Burst of Flowers” was featured on the cover of the On the Go section of the Home News Tribune. Last year, I received a Blue Ribbon Award of Excellence for my watercolor/collage “Reflections” at the 2012 East Brunswick Fine Arts Festival.

          My art work is in private collections in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania and in the Township of East Brunswick’s Permanent Art Collection.

On behalf of the Cranbury Arts Council (CAC), I write to request your support so that our mission, to promote

the arts in our community, may continue. Working towards this goal, we ask you to join us at our fundraising

event to be held on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at 7:00 pm at the Cranbury Inn, Cranbury NJ. Your presence,

either in person or by your contribution, will provide the resources necessary to enrich Cranbury and the

surrounding communities with many outstanding visual, music and performing arts programs.

If you are not familiar with CAC’s work, the non-profit organization has hosted many events during the

16 years of its existence, including:

Youth Shelter Arts Program – An arts enrichment curriculum at the Middlesex County Youth Shelter,

a 24-hour live-in facility for at risk teens. The residents receive High school credit for their participation in

Poetry and Visual Arts Programs.

Art & Technology Camp – A four week summer day camp for grades K-9 that offers classes in theatre, dance,

music, fashion design, art, computer graphics and woodworking to name a few.

The Gourgaud Gallery – Located in Cranbury Town Hall. The Gallery hosts a new art exhibit every month

featuring local artists and art groups. The Gallery is also utilized for art workshops, comedy improv and

musical performances.

Art in the Park – A free monthly plein air program held from May to October open to all ages and experiences.

A professional artist is on hand to host and lend a critical eye. The program features an art exhibit in December

showcasing the artwork created from the monthly plein air sessions.

Awards – CAC provides a $100 award for two eighth grade students who have been selected by the Cranbury

School’s Music and Art teachers at the year end Awards Night. A $2000 award is given to a Princeton High

School graduating senior who resides in Cranbury. The student is selected by the CAC Awards Committee and

has demonstrated excellence in the Visual Arts, Music- Instrumental & Vocal, Theatre Arts, Dance or Poetry.

Cranstock – A free two day music festival featuring the varied music styles of many local groups.

Community Involvement – The CAC participates in Cranbury community events including Cranbury Day,

Drug Free Fair , Cranbury Lions Club Pancake Breakfast other events throughout the year.

The CAC needs your help to continue funding these outstanding programs. During the event, the CAC will

host a Silent Auction with many wonderful baskets to bid on with offerings for everyone, as well as original

framed artwork donated by local artists. If you cannot attend, your financial contribution or donation to the

Silent Auction will be greatly appreciated and recognized in the CAC Fundraiser Program. Please let us know

The Winter Workshops at the Gourgaud Gallery -September Exhibit

The Winter Workshops Series at the Gourgaud Gallery      - September 1 from 1-3 PM-September 28.

 

 

In September the Gourgaud Gallery, located at Cranbury Town Hall, 23-A N. Main Street in Cranbury, N.J. will be hosting an exhibit for free, namely, "Winter Workshop Series Exhibit" by Workshop Artists.

 

The Winter Workshops at the Gourgaud Gallery sponsored by the Cranbury Arts Council has given local artists the opportunity to remain painting 12 months of the year. CAC has hosted Art in the Park sessions all around the area for the spring/summer months for plein air painting. Colleen Cahill started this program to supplement it so that even in the doldrums of winter we are able to assemble to learn, to paint and to create together. The focus this year has been on watercolor, specialized topics such as putting people in a landscape and creative collage and mixed media.

 

The Cranbury Arts Council employs working artists to facilitate these workshops and each year we get a great turnout to these sessions. We celebrate the work done at the workshops (collage, pastels, and watercolors being among the classes) with a gallery showing. Work can be submitted late August from workshop participants that are reviewed and possibly juried, based on the response. We also try to hang a piece from each of our artists and instructors.

 

The Winter Workshop gallery show will have a reception on Sunday, September 1 from 1-3 PM and we hope many can come to see these artistic efforts at the Gourgaud Gallery where ART happens.

The artwork is for sale with 20% of each sale going to support the Cranbury Arts Council and its programs. Cash or a check made out to the Cranbury Arts Council is accepted as payment.

 

The Gallery is located in Town Hall, 23-A North Main Street in Cranbury, NJ and is free and open to the public Mon-Fri from 9 AM-4 PM, September 1-29 (closed on Labor Day) and the third and last Sunday of the month. You can meet the exhibiting Artists at the reception on September 1 from 1-3 PM. Refreshments are served at the Artist Reception.

 

The Gourgaud Gallery will also offer matted paintings for sale outside of the gallery, as part of Cranbury Day on September 7.

The featured artist for the month of August at the Gourgaud Gallery will be Arthur D. Anderson.  For this one-man show, The Gallery will be highlighting three exhibits of Mr. Anderson’s works, including those from his recent acrylic abstract series “The Subjectivity of Time”; Watercolors in the English style collected in “Watercolors Britannia”; and a selection of figurative and traditional works in acrylic and watercolor.

Arthur Anderson continues a family tradition of fine art dating back a century, when his maternal grandfather Alan Silverman began study at Cooper Union, eventually becoming a prominent sculptor and oil painter and was part of the New Deal's WPA Program. Alan's wife, Anna Silverman (Arthur's grandmother) painted under the name "Vanya," and exhibited at the Whitney Studio Club, later the Whitney Museum of Art.

Anderson has exhibited his work at numerous exhibitions on Long Island, including Long Beach, Southampton and Shelter Island. His works are in collections throughout the U.S., and he has done portrait commissions in California, Florida and Texas.

Arthur studied watercolor with Edgar Whitney and Betty Lou Schlemm, and acrylic painting and portraiture at the Art Students League of New York.

Anderson lives in Oceanside, New York with his wife, Rochelle.

Landscape interpretation is not just a matter of recording the physical aspects of the land, such as it’s geological structure and the space in which it exists; equally important are less tangible factors like memory and history and the passage of time. Time is the dimension in which the meaning of a landscape unfolds, and it is registered in this body of work as the constantly changing pattern of time itself.

 

There has always been a romantic interpretation associated with imagery concerning the environment, though whether these interpretations are false or idealized depends on the opinion of the viewer. They do, however, reflect a spiritual interaction between art and nature. In my personal opinion the relationship man has with the natural environment is an amalgamation of survival, innate motherly love and an overwhelming sense of infinite time.

 

It is relevant that we have approached a momentous juncture in time. Established traditions and social trends are rapidly disintegrating and, in turn, science and technology are amazing us with their genius by revolutionizing lifestyles beyond comprehension. The natural environment is a controversial issue within the present social climate, and it is apparent that there is an ever-increasing demand for the preservation and protection of many decreasing natural ecosystems.

 

I find the landscapes of Caithness and Sutherland quite extraordinary. There is an overwhelming energy in the rugged battered coastlines and a powerful sense of history and prehistory that saturates the land. The 180-degree horizon, which cradles an abundance of weather from dawn to dusk, the sprawling landscapes that have sustained man and the clarity of it’s light are only but a few of Caithness and Sutherland’s physical qualities.

 

 

 

Kelli Lynn Abdoney

 

Kelli Abdoney was born in 1975 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, but her childhood was spent exploring the natural wonderland of Scotland, a magical landscape that continues to inspire her.

 

Having graduated from Glasgow School of Art, where she studied photography and the visual arts, she has enjoyed a career at the forefront of new media in Scottish journalism.
