ARTIST’S STATEMENT – FRANCINE VAN OSTRAND

As a full time artist I enjoy working in the “Mixed Media” venue. I like to paint with bright
colors using acrylics, watercolor and collage in a layeringtechnique, then add lots of texture
in a realistic or abstract form. My artwork is decorative but with a strong feeling of purpose.
It is free and flows from one shape to another. It is the process of collecting ephemera,
making decorative papers, and preparing everything for the canvas that is also very enjoyable
to me. I enjoy being a full time artist and look forward to painting everyday.

                                                                Francine Van Ostrand
Francine Van Ostrand was born in Paterson, New Jersey and grew up in Haledon, New Jersey. She was always interested in art and had a very influential High School art teacher. He introducedher to many mediums raging from watercolor to batik. After graduating from High School she went on to Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts for a three year education in art. Aftergraduation she went on to become a textile designer and worked in that field for 38 years.
When she retired she joined the Ocean County Artists Guild and took many classes there.
Since she did very detailed work in her textile career and wanted a change she started doing mixed media after taking several classes at the Guild with mixed media artist, Dolores Ziegler.
Several years later she has won many awards for her mixed media paintings and now teaches mixed media at the OCAG. She is also President of the Ocean County Artist’s Guild and a member of the Toms River Artist’s Community.

Images of Cranbury

David Nissen.  May 3 Reception.  Images of Cranbury
We in Cranbury have been fortunate to preserve the scale and context of our historic village, its agricultural and natural periphery, and the complex and lively community it sustains.
Lee and I have lived here for almost 4 decades, raised our two children, and shared in the cultural and governance organizations of the community.  I have always taken photos, “snapshots” if you will, of events and travels.  But since retiring from the NY commute 5 years ago, I have devoted much of my time and energy to photography, to give my right-brain a chance..

This exhibit presents some 40 images of Cranbury from a decade of photographs.  I hope they evoke for you some of the essence of our community, as they do for us.

See Facebook:  Gourgaud Gallery for article and pictures

Sumner Projects

professional Sumi-e artist Pamela Sumner is offering a week-long ink painting retreat in Maine from September 12th  - September 19th.  The detailed information about the retreat can be found at www.sumnerprojects.com.  The focus will be on painting pine.
Ginny felt that the Cranbury Arts Council might wish to let its members and supporters know about this event, since many artists may be interested in learning more about Sumi-e technique.  The retreat promises to be a fun and informative week with all meals and accomodations included in the cost.
If you have any questions, you can contact me or reach out directly to Pamela.  Her contact information is on the website.
