"Cranbury Memories" art exhibit which is scheduled for next month at the Gourgaud
Gallery, located at Cranbury Town Hall, 23-A North Main Street in
Cranbury, NJ. "Cranbury Memories"Don Jo Swanagan Retrospective May
5-26Reception - Sunday May 5 from 1-3 pmHours - Monday - Friday 9 am- 4
pm (closed on Memorial Day)Sundays 1-3 pm Don Jo Swanagan became
fascinated with designing scenery for theatrical productions at Denison
University and went on to Yale University to earn his masters in
theatrical design and then started a career in television and film.
Coming to live in Cranbury in 1959 was the fulfillment of a dream as
Don
felt that Cranbury itself was the perfect setting for his
family. On
weekends and vacations Don enjoyed sketching and painting
watercolors on
site. Locally, Don did not travel far from Cranbury as
he was very
interested in both the local farms and Cranbury
architecture. Unfortunately,
he neither recorded the date nor the
location of any of his works, but in
the case of the pictures on
exhibit here we are certain that all are of
local scenes within a
relatively short distance from his home on Main
Street, Cranbury.
Sadly, some farm structures are not standing
today. Architecture was an
abiding love for Don everywhere he went and he
enjoyed contributing his
efforts through serving on the Cranbury Zoning and
Planning Boards and
the Cranbury Historical & Preservation Society where
he designed the
Perrine Wing, donated by Mary Perrine in 1974. For three
Historical
Society House Tours he contributed a cover pencil drawing for the
tour
brochure.
